A dumbwaiter is a fixed lifting device that serves multiple floors. It has a car, and its size and structure prohibit people from entering. The car runs between two rigid guide rails that are perpendicular to or inclined at an angle of less than 15° to the vertical. It is used to transport light items such as books, documents, and food, but people are not allowed to enter the car. It is controlled by buttons on the outside of the door.
